They're both mutts, really - I wasn't up for paying thousands of dollars for one, however cute they are.

The current Fender series is similar with a few tweaks. A second Squier version in the CV range appeared 7 or 8 years ago and was fairly successful - it had a 24" scale on a 50s style body that body some similarity to the Mexican version. It didn't sell well or last very long, and after it was dropped the parts inventory was flushed through with an equally short lived Squier version. It had a slightly longer scale although still pretty close to 22.5". Like the Musicmaster introduced a few months earlier, it featured basic but effective construction and a 22.5 inch scale length (standard Fender guitars feature a 25.5 inch scale) and cost 149.50 (equivalent to 1,609 in 2022). In the mid 90s a Mexican Duo with the original body style was briefly offered. The Fender Duo-Sonic was introduced in 1956. The Mustang proved a much better seller and Duo was quietly retired at the end of the 60s. The Mustang joined the series as a third model (a Duo Sonic Mk II is just a Mustang with a hard tail). In '64 the Duo Sonic was overhauled to a larger, more noticeably offset body and was offered in both 22.5" and 24" versions. Between '59-'64 the model stayed pretty much the same except for some changes in colour options. The first ones were maple board with a Desert Sand finish, switching to rosewood in '59.

There was a single pickup model called the Musicmaster, although all were routed for two pickups. It had a small, non contoured body, a 22.5" scale and two pickups borrowed from Fender's lap steel if the day. The original was intended as a 3/4 companion to the Strat. There are quite a few iterations of the Duo Sonic. I love these little guitars - strange as it might sound they're my favourite Fender design.
